Boxes are among the most abundant and low-cost materials of everyday life, commonly found in grocery stores, industrial settings, and domestic interiors. Their original purpose and point of origin often dissolve over time; what remains is a neutral container, emptied of context and ready to be reassigned. Boxes, once designed to transport goods, belongings or inventory across oceans and supply chains, frequently reappear in domestic settings as tools for relocation; carrying books, dishes, clothes, or fragments of a life packed in haste. Through this shift, a container once associated with global circulation becomes a temporary archive of personal belongings. Objects with entirely different origins are brought into contact, forming invisible constellations that blur distinctions between the disposable and the valuable, the functional and the sentimental. This might include an interest in the everyday, as seen through its material traces and pictorial symbols. Tobias explores the poetics of 'ordinary' things, transforming them with great craftsmanship and material sensitivity into stylized reliefs and objects. These works evoke various cultural codes—surrealism, children's railways, or 1960s apartment interiors—creating a journey through collective cultural memory. Layo, on the other hand, brings everyday objects closer to the realm of the ready-made. His installation, made from various dinner party glasses, stand as lonely remnants of the past. The cultural associations tied to these objects suggest conversations, arguments, or debates, functioning as still lifes that allude to impermanence. Trin Alt works with previously used everyday items such as blankets or discarded cardboard boxes. As bodily fluid stains transform into abstract pictorial structures, these objects—once associated with private life—become the very art objects under contemplation. The artists’ shared intervention in the gallery space is the shadow, the imprint of a railing that once was part of the exhibition space. This decorative interior element, once unloved by artists and curators alike, now peels away from the gallery walls, perhaps revealing a romantic trace of something irretrievably lost. Here, we are presented with mere ‘ordinary objects’—belts, cutlery, buttons, glassware, or blankets—that we encounter daily without paying them any special attention. These objects become the motifs, or perhaps the actors, in the fickle play of (pictorial) illusion and the impermanence of our perception and memory. They also serve as symbols of the transience of our experiences in general. Through these objects, we observe 'magic' in scale, in material, and in the treatment of surfaces, as well as the revival of objects that have been removed from their normal use and placed into new configurations. It is the viewer, from their own perspective, who has the power to disrupt and recreate the illusion. Beyond a phenomenological perspective (considering how the world in question appears to us), the exhibition invites interpretation through the lens of a new materialist, emphasizing the agency of matter in the construction of reality. A carefully curated collection of furniture, dishes, memory artefacts, small pleasures. However, the past few, pandemic and war stained years, pushed us to reimagine what home actually is. For some, it is a warm space and a place for decompression. For others, it’s amemory forever lost, an unreachable state of being, a battlefield, an uncanny site of precarious labor, neoliberal production, consumption and biopolitical control. 1 And the walls give us both a loving hug and a punch into the stomach. A solo exhibition of Trin Alt explores the notions of intimacy and comfort, but also discomfort that unfold behind the closed doors, in a place we call home. Home, as a space of (desired) care and comfort, home, as a fabricated scenography that is never finished, home as a place of bitter nostalgia. Trin’s body of work, selected for this exhibition, triggers an intense feeling of familiarity, a shared experience that smells like something we have already encountered. Set into a specific environment of a boxing gym, the artworks create a certain tension between an imagined tenderness of home and a presumed violence of the gym. But, a home can also be a place of violence and a boxing gym can be a place of care and tenderness. Painted duvets with decades old sweat stains and odors still stamped into them aestheticize a peculiar kind of softness and vulnerability we all experience while lying in the bed (at home). Bed, a stage for (re-)encountering memories, anxieties, night- long pillowtalks, body performances. A symptom of homeliness. Helmets asmetaphors of home, that protect us from the outside world, but break if we fall way too badly. Together with his works, Trin’s inviting us into a space where affection and authenticity meets distress and disappointment, that we might call home, but not quite. Trin’s body of work, selected for this exhibition, triggers an intense feeling of familiarity, a shared experience that smells like something we have already encountered. Set into a specific environment of a boxing gym, the artworks create a certain tension between an imagined tenderness of home and a presumed violence of the gym. But, a home can also be a place of violence and a boxing gym can be a place of care and tenderness. Painted duvets with decades old sweat stains and odors still stamped into them aestheticize a peculiar kind of softness and vulnerability we all experience while lying in the bed (at home). Bed, a stage for (re-)encountering memories, anxieties, night- long pillowtalks, body performances. A symptom of homeliness. Helmets asmetaphors of home, that protect us from the outside world, but break if we fall way too badly. Together with his works, Trin’s inviting us into a space where affection and authenticity meets distress and disappointment, that we might call home, but not quite. In the exhibition Scorching they relate to different visions of the future, such as contaminated landscapes with totems sprouting from the toxic soil or the formation of a new outlaw motorcycle club, determined to create alternative identity. The title of Zuza Golińska’s sculptural series Red Giants is connected to the term used to describe the expansion and lighting up of dying stars in the final stages of their stellar evolution. The totems created from waste produce, gathered by the artist in the Gdańsk Shipyard connect to the solarpunk movement in which people no longer produce, but recycle and reuse what is left after an apocalypse, caused by the Sun slowly dying. The raw forms of the sculptures bring to mind prehistoric totems representing solar deities and are reminiscent of times when nature and humans were more intertwined. Post-apocalyptic narratives often feature biker communities portrayed as groups of outcasts surviving and living dangerously on the edge of society. By combining charcoal drawings with a series of hand-painted pink helmets, Trin Alt’s works create a representation of a new, less binary oriented community, in which vulnerability replaces the stereotypical macho aesthetic and ideology of the motorcycle gangs. The adaptation to the new living conditions is symbolized by the reappearing motif of a spider, one of the most resilient animals to survive in harsh environments. In the exhibition both artists connect different visions of the future reminiscent of scenes present in sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction, computer games or movies which until recently seemed impossible, but have now become an inescapable part of our reality. By combining glimpses of possible outcomes both artists highlight unpredictability, the fear of the unknown and the potential for a future where resources are scarce. The artists are not offering an answer to the question What will the future on our planet look like?, but leave the viewer with a possibility of different scenarios – an awakening of a new community living in ecological utopia where nature and technology grow in harmony, a dystopian nightmare full of violent counterculture movements or the Earth transforming into an uninhabitable contaminated wasteland.
